The Stonewold is a large concrete tile that has a very low profile thus mimicking slates, they come in a limited number of colours with brown and grey being the most popular. There are actually three versions of the Stonewold available:

Stonewold mk2 – The largest tile produced by Redland and has been in production for a number of years making it one of the most popular roofing tiles in the United Kingdom. The specifications for this tile are located above.

Mini Stonewold – A smaller version of the ever popular Stonewold. The dimensions are 418mm x 334mm.

Mockbond Mini Stonewold – As the name suggests this tile has a fake (dummy) groove cut through the middle of the tile thus giving the appearance of two tiles. The dimensions are the same as the Mini version.

Note that the original mk1 is no longer in production.

Difference Between a mk1 and mk2 Stonewold Tile

Redland Stonewold

The mk1 and mk2 tiles are exactly the same size but the nibs on the back of the tile are in a different location, this means you cannot replace a mk1 with a mk2 unless you first adjust the position of the roof batten that the tile rests on. This could be tricky if you only need to replace one or two tiles but shouldn’t be a problem if you want to replace a whole course.

If you are extending a porch or other small roof it might be worth removing all mk1′s and replacing them entirely with newer Mini Stonewolds as they are alot cheaper and as an added bonus you can sell second hand mk1′s for a premium as they are hard to find.

Fixing and Laying

Because these tiles are flat they are very easy to transport, stack and lay. They are prone to breakages on the corners, especially older weathered mk1′s.

Below are the fixing guidelines for these three tiles:

Mini stonewold and Mockbond – One nail on each tile and clipped. Use two nails for laying in areas at risk of extreme wind.

Stonewold mk2 – This tile doesn’t have any fixing holes so each tile must be clipped with the double-batten clip (see pic to the right)

All Stonewold tiles must be laid broken bonded and half cuts are therefore permitted at gable ends.

Guarantee

Redland offer a comprehensive guarantee that not only covers their Stonewold range of tiles but also any labour fees and costs involved with the replacement. They also cover accessories too.
