So called “plain tiles” are by far the most popular roofing tile in the United Kingdom and are also very popular worldwide. Redland do not hold the exclusive rights to this profile and there are dozens, if not hundreds of other variants on sale from many different producers. Modern concrete versions are now extremely popular as they are cheap to produce and long lasting. They can also be altered to almost any colour. Clay based plain tiles are still used on period roofs and for repairs.
Put simply Plain tiles are perhaps the most versatile roof covering you can buy.
The Redland plain tile is 268mm x 165mm with a slight curve mid tile and is made from concrete, it can have either a smooth or granular coating on the exposed surface. There are also ornamental variants that can be used to create patterns in the roof. Plain tiles can also be hung vertically.
Fitting Guidelines
Needless to say that this tile is not laid in a straight bond but with a method called the “double lap”. There are no channels or interlocking sections on Plain Tiles. The roof is kept watertight because each tile is laid in such a manner that it overlaps the two tiles beneath it. This method also ensures the roof stays protected even if a tile should break.
According to Redland each tile should be double nailed to the batten but in reality most roofing contractors will nail the tiles around the perimeter (ridge, gable, eaves and valleys) and then every third or fourth row. It is not 100% clear if this will invalidate the tile guarantee offered by Redland
Below are the suggested fixings for this tile:
40 x 2.65mm standard tile nail. Product code – 9331.
Top clip for use on tiles near the ridge. Product code – 9282
Half cuts are permitted but contractors should use “tile and a halfs” where possible.
Guarantee
The guarantee period for this tile is 15 years, given that they should last in excess of 100 years the guarantee period is a little disappointing although Redland claim that it’s one of the most comprehensive and they offer to replace faulty tiles, cover the costs of associated materials and also the labour fees.
For the guarantee to be effective Redland will most likely expect the tiles to be laid in accordance with the fitting instructions, therefore contractors should pay extra attention to both the guidelines and the zonal fixing spec sheets.
