The Double Roman, also known as the Redland 50 is one of the most popular tiles in the United Kingdom, it is a fairly wide concrete tile with a medium height that interlocks and is available in several colours in both smooth or granular finishes. The brown granular product is the most commonly seen and also blends well with old weathered tiles.

The Redland 50 is very similar to the Marley Double Roman and the two are often confused. The actual design of this profile dates back several hundred years and is not exclusive to either Redland or Marley.

The tile is easy to lay but does suffer from breakages on the corners, for this reason extra care should be taken during loading and transportation.

Fixing and Laying

Although many roofers do not do so, these tiles should actually be laid straight bonded and also nailed or clipped on each tile, rather than every few courses. Although this does involve a lot of extra work it will ensure the roof meets Redland’s installation requirements and the that the guarantee is fully valid. Note that in locations of high wind a Posidrive screw should be used instead of a nail.

There are several fixings that can be used on this tile, determining the correct one will depend on the location of the property and it’s altitude. half cuts are permitted at gable ends but should be avoided if possible. A bird comb or filler is not required at the eaves for this tile.
